Mike's Story - Workplace Literacy at Action Read

Mike works at an auto parts factory. He has been promoted to shift supervisor.

He learns about Action Read from his manager. He asks for help with his reading, writing and math.

Mike meets with the Learner / Tutor Coordinator, who asks him some questions about his previous education, his learning style, and his goals. They complete a few activities to determine what he's good at, and where he needs some practise.

He is matched with Tim, a tutor. They meet one evening a week at Action Read.

Together they set up an email account, and Mike learns how to email other shift supervisors, his manager, and his sister in New Brunswick.

Mike brings in training manuals for a new machine at work. Tim reads along with him, to make sure Mike understands how to use, maintain and repair the machine.

Mike needs to calculate the number of parts that his shift must produce, and also add up each employee's hours each week. Mike joins the Wednesday morning Math Group, and learns to add and subtract on paper and with a calculator.

One of Mike's duties is to fill in incident and injury reports. He brings a blank form to Action Read, and he talks to Tim about the kinds of things that need to be reported. They make a list of words that Mike needs to use on the form, and practise filling it out.

Mike also wants to read the sports section in the newspaper. Every week, Mike and Tim spend half an hour reading an article and looking at player statistics.
