Nuria's Story - Employment Training at Action Read

Nuria has been working as a cashier for several years. The store has recently laid off some employees, including Nuria. She is ready for a career change, but she is nervous about learning new skills.

She hears about Action Read from her Employment Insurance worker. She asks for help with her computer skills for job searching, and for information about training and employment programs in Guelph.

Nuria starts coming to Action Read's computer drop-in on Monday mornings. With the Computer Learning Facilitator, Nuria explores her options for employment and training support. She also learns how to access and use the Job Bank.

She is referred to Lutherwood Adult Employment Services, where she meets an employment counsellor. She gets a lot of information about career planning and job search strategies. She takes this material to Action Read, where she gets help reading and understanding it. She also considers taking a certificate program at Conestoga College.

When she learns that she is eligible for the Self-Employment Benefit program, Nuria decides that she wants to start a residential cleaning business. She is approved for the program, and Action Read matches her with Amanda, a volunteer tutor who has her own small business.

Nuria attends training workshops through the Guelph Business Enterprise Centre, then takes the notes to her weekly tutoring sessions to make sure that she understands them. They also spend some time writing and editing a business plan, which Nuria types into the computer. Later, Amanda teaches her to use a computer spreadsheet program to keep track of client information.

When her cleaning business is up and running, Nuria continues to come to Action Read and meet with Amanda. They still work on skills for her business, but she also has a new goal: to write her life story!
