Our Volunteers Rock!

Tonight Action Read staff and board honoured our wonderful volunteers through drumming and singing. We spoke of the key role our dedicated and resourceful volunteers play at Action Read. Mayor Karen Farbridge

and MP Frank Valeriote offered words of encouragement and appreciation, and each volunteer received a certificate of appreciation from Frank Valeriote. Then, storyteller, musician and Action Read facilitator Jan Sherman led a musical evening using hand drums and shakers. We sang, drummed and acted silly until it was time to go! Thank you to all our volunteers over the past 25 years!

Financial Literacy

Action Read has partnered with ABC Canada to launch a new project called, Money Matters. The project pairs volunteers from TD Waterhouse with Action Read learners. TD tutors use their professional knowledge and experience to help learners understand basic banking concepts, as well as how to make budget and spending plans, credit and loans, savings and RESPs. The project uses a specially designed clear language curriculum for adult literacy learners, as well as the book Easy Money by Gail Vaz-Oxlade. Thanks to everyone who has signed up to participate. We look forward to hearing how learners are able to apply their new knowledge to their lives!

Action Read would like to invite all tutors and volunteers to our annual Volunteer Appreciation Event taking place on Tuesday April 24th at Action Read. Come for drumming and community songwriting, and as always, cake! More information will follow.

Healthy Living

Action Read will be cooking with the Community Health Centre. This program is for learners who struggle with eating well on a tight budget. In this program, delicious healthy food from the Garden Fresh Box is turned into a healthy, delicious meal. Learn hands-on about meal planning, shopping for healthy foods and how to cook tasty, low-cost meals. No Cost. Please mention it to your learner. Speak to Sarah for information.
