Action Readers hamming it up at our Halloween Party

November 5, 2014

Action Read workshop and events are designed to increase understanding, to foster community and creativity, and to strengthen skills on a range of topics of interest to our learners and tutors.

1. Join us on Wednesday, November 12 from 6 – 8 pm for ‘Filling Knowledge Bundles Workshop’ with Jan Sherman. Come and explore this traditional Aboriginal perspective on holistic learning. And on Wednesday, November 26 – from 6 – 8 pm, follow up with our ‘Sharing Circle’ where we will brainstorm and share ideas on how to incorporate ‘Filling Knowledge Bundles’ into our tutoring sessions and groups.

2.Tutor Orientation (Part 1 of 2) for new volunteers tutors will be held on Thursday, November 20 from 6:30 to 8:30.

3. We are into our last month of our Action Read United Way Campaign. So far we have raised over $130.00, not including our employee campaign, at such events as our Halloween Party (see above). Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far.

4. Save the date! Action Read Annual Holiday Party at Dublin Street United Church will be held on Wednesday, December 3 from 5:30-8:30 pm. Sign-up sheets are now posted on our front reception desk!

5. 1 City . 1 Day . $1 Million – Guelph Gives. Most people know about Black Friday and Cyber Monday… now Giving Tuesday is coming to Canada on Tuesday, December 2. It is a new Canadian movement for giving and volunteering taking place each year after Cyber Monday. This is a day where charities, companies and individuals join together to share commitments, rally for favourite causes and learn about new ones. Action Read will be participating in this event at Quebec Street Mall, downtown Guelph. Our goal is:

• Have at least a 1000 word story by the end of the day, with as many participants as possible.
• 10 new names added to our mailing list
• 10 volunteer applications distributed
• Raise funds for our literacy programs

We will also be selling handmade items to stuff your stocking with!

You can find out more about ‘Guelphgives’ at http://www.guelphgives.ca . If you get an opportunity – come and check out this fun event.

6. Check out the Action Read Blog! Follow the blog link at top of home page. You will find interesting articles about learning and goal setting. For example, the posting ‘Encouraging a Learning Mindset’ offers great tips to help your learning partner improve reading, writing and numeracy skills.

Would you like to contribute your writing? Do you have something to say about your journey as an adult learner or as a tutor? Have you discovered a strategy that works well for improving literacy or numeracy skills? Publish it on our blog! Submit your writing, suggestions and comments to Mira.

7. Receptionist Training
In January 2015 we are offering another session of our popular new ‘Receptionist Training’ course. Participants are required to attend all 4 sessions on: January 7, 14, 21 & 28 from 9:30am – 4pm (lunch break from 12-1pm). Call Action Read for details.
