PEN Canada Event

Guests from PEN Canada speaking at Action Read's International Literacy Day celebration.

September 9, 2016

On September 8th 2016, Action Read held a very powerful event to celebrate International Literacy Day. We heard an incredible presentation from former Action Read learner Laurie Johnson, who spoke with clarity and force about his personal journey and the importance of literacy within it. Educator Michael Noonan’s touching words of support, and Dr. Karen Houle’s intensely personal and wise presentation on the importance of literacy made us reflect with gratitude. The evening culminated with a conversation between exiled Bangladeshi writer Raihan Abir and PEN Canada’s Brendan de Caires, which added a tremendously important perspective on the issue of freedom of expression. It was the kind of event that found you reflecting and discussing several days later.
